Exercicis del past continuous — Anglès 3r ESO

'At 7 a.m. I was sleeping.' Subjecte 'I' → was; sleep + -ing → sleeping.

'We weren't listening to the teacher.' Subjecte 'We' → weren't + listening.

'Was she cooking dinner?' Posem 'Was' davant del subjecte i deixem 'cooking'.

At 5 p.m. yesterday descriu una acció en curs en aquell moment: was/were + -ing.
They were playing football at 5 p.m. yesterday.

Negativa del past continuous: wasn't + verb-ing.
He wasn't sleeping at ten o'clock.

S'inverteix el verb to be i el subjecte.
Were you running in the park?

The children és plural (they): were.
The children were laughing.

running (es dobla la n), making i writing (cau la e), sitting (es dobla la t), lying (ie passa a y).
Són les regles d'ortografia més habituals del -ing.

En les respostes breus repetim només l'auxiliar.
Yes, they were.

Les dues accions són llargues i van en paral·lel: while.
I was cooking while my brother was doing his homework.

'She was studying WHEN the storm started.' L'acció curta puntual ('the storm started', past simple) va amb 'when'.

'While we were having dinner, the lights went out.' Acció llarga en past continuous (were having) i acció curta en past simple (went).

'The birds were singing and the sun was shining.' Són accions de fons que descriuen el context: past continuous.

'I was reading a book when suddenly the lights went off.' Acció de fons en past continuous (was reading) i fet puntual en past simple (went off).

Són accions simultànies en curs: was/were + -ing.
While Dad was driving, Mum was reading a map and the kids were sleeping.

El fons va en past continuous i l'acció puntual en past simple.
The sun was shining when we arrived.

Pregunta: What were you doing when the teacher came in?
Resposta model: I was talking to my friend.

Past continuous: was walking (acció de fons en curs).
Past simple: was (estat), heard i stopped (fets puntuals).
Els fets que fan avançar la història van en past simple.

Caminava (acció en curs) quan va començar a ploure (acció puntual): past continuous per a la llarga.
She was walking home when it started to rain.

Want i have (en aquest sentit) són verbs d'estat: no s'usen en continu.
I wanted to call you, but I didn't have your number.

L'acció de començar la pel·lícula és anterior a arribar-hi: past perfect (had + participi).
When we arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.

'I knew the answer.' 'know' és un verb d'estat i no s'usa en forma continua; va en past simple.

'When the bell rang, everyone left.' Dues accions puntuals en seqüència: totes dues en past simple.

'It was raining hard. While we were waiting for the bus, a car stopped and a man offered us a lift.' Fons en past continuous (was raining, were waiting) i fets en past simple (stopped, offered).

Model de resposta:
While I was walking home, it started to rain.
As I was looking for my keys, I heard a strange noise.
The wind was blowing and the trees were shaking.
Es valora el past continuous per al fons i el past simple per a l'acció puntual.

Were walking (acció de fons), saw (fet puntual), was eating (acció en curs), didn't notice (fet puntual).
Last Saturday we were walking in the forest when we saw a fox. It was eating something and it didn't notice us.

Error 1: see és un fet puntual i verb de percepció: when I saw my friend.
Error 2: talk ha d'anar en passat: we talked.
Correcte: I was walking to school when I saw my friend. She was waiting for the bus, so I stopped and we talked for a while.

Sopar va ser abans que jo arribés: had already eaten (past perfect).
Després vaig sopar jo sol: ate (past simple).
When I got home, my sister had already eaten dinner, so I ate alone.

L'acció llarga (anar en bici) i l'acció puntual (veure l'accident).
While Ona was cycling, she saw an accident. (o: Ona was cycling when she saw an accident.)

Model de resposta:
I was walking home alone when I heard footsteps behind me. I stopped and turned around, but nobody was there. Then a black cat jumped out of a bin and I started to laugh.
