First / Firstly / First of all. (per començar un discurs)

Finally / Lastly / In conclusion. (per acabar)

Take off vol dir treure's (una peça de roba o les sabates). Take out vol dir treure d'un lloc.
Please take off your shoes before you come in.

Get up vol dir llevar-se del llit.
I get up at seven o'clock every morning.

Les dues idees s'oposen (jo prefereixo el te, ella el cafè), per tant cal un connector de contrast: but.
I like tea, but my sister prefers coffee.

So introdueix la conseqüència; but expressa contrast.
She was very tired, so she went to bed early.

1. give up → b (abandonar, rendir-se)
2. find out → a (descobrir, assabentar-se)
3. set off → c (començar un viatge, sortir)

Because introdueix la causa; so introdueix la conseqüència.
La pluja és la causa de quedar-se a casa: We stayed at home because it was raining.

Quan sortim, apaguem els llums: switch off. Per encendre'ls seria switch on.
Switch off the lights when you leave the room.

Can you turn it on? (amb pronom, l'objecte va enmig del phrasal verb separable)

The hotel was cheap. However, the service was excellent. ('However,' al principi de la segona frase amb coma)

because of / due to fog. (davant d'un nom → because of o due to)

First, preheat the oven. Then put in the cake. Finally, take it out. (seqüència de passos amb connectors)

Look after és un phrasal verb inseparable: l'objecte va sempre darrere de la partícula.
I look after my grandmother at weekends.

a) cancelled → called off the picnic
b) tolerate → put up with this noise
c) continue → carry on working

Although va seguit d'una oració completa (subjecte + verb) i expressa contrast.
Although he was ill, he went to school.
També val: He went to school although he was ill.

In spite of va seguit d'un nom (o gerundi), no d'una oració.
In spite of the terrible traffic, we arrived on time.

Whereas (o while) contrasta dues coses o persones.
My brother is very tidy, whereas I am quite messy.

So that expressa finalitat i va seguit de subjecte + verb (sovint amb can).
I use an app so that I can learn new vocabulary.
Alternativa: I use an app to learn new vocabulary.

a) takes off: l'avió enlaira.
b) run out of: quedar-se sense alguna cosa.
Aquests phrasal verbs són difícils de deduir, s'han de memoritzar.

Although it was raining, we played football. (davant d'una frase amb verb s'usa although; 'despite' aniria amb nom: 'Despite the rain')

I stayed at home because of the rain. (davant d'un nom cal 'because of', no 'because')

He didn't study. Therefore, he failed the exam. ('Therefore,' encapçala la conseqüència amb coma)

As a result introdueix una conseqüència i porta coma darrere.
There was a strike. As a result, many trains were cancelled.

Despite no porta of (sí que en porta in spite of).
Despite the rain, we had a picnic. / In spite of the rain, we had a picnic.

La segona frase contradiu l'expectativa que ser ric faci feliç, per tant cal un connector de contrast: Nevertheless.
Therefore expressa conseqüència.

Substituïm els phrasal verbs per verbs més formals.
We need to devise a solution and implement the plan.
Els phrasal verbs són habituals en l'anglès oral; en textos formals se'n prefereixen els sinònims.

(1) Firstly: introdueix el primer argument.
(2) However: marca contrast.
(3) For example: introdueix un exemple.
(4) As a result: indica la conseqüència.

Model de resposta:
First, I wake up at seven and get up straight away. Then I put on my uniform and have breakfast. After that, I pick up my bag and set off for school. Finally, I arrive at 8:20.
Phrasal verbs: wake up, get up, put on, pick up, set off.
