Exercici 2
Defineix 'metaphor' i 'simile' i explica la diferència formal entre totes dues.
Simile: compara explícitament dues coses amb 'like' o 'as'. La diferència formal és la presència (símil) o absència (metàfora) de la paraula de comparació 'like/as'.
Exercici 3
Exercici 4
Exercici 5
Defineix «setting» i identifica'n els elements (lloc, moment, ambient) en la frase «It was a cold night in a deserted railway station.»
Mostra la solució
El setting és el context de temps i lloc on passa l'acció.
Lloc: a railway station. Moment: night. Ambient: cold and deserted (fred i buit).
a) «The classroom was a zoo.»
b) «She is as brave as a lion.»
c) «The wind whispered through the trees.»
b) Símil: compara amb as... as.
Exercici 7
«I can't believe it! Another rejection letter, and after all my hard work...»
Ho mostren «I can't believe it!», «Another rejection letter» i els punts suspensius, que suggereixen cansament.
I've told you a million times to tidy your room.»
Exercici 10
Defineix «alliteration» i «onomatopoeia» i identifica'ls en aquestes frases: a) «The snake slid silently through the grass.» b) «The bees buzzed around the flowers.»
Exemple: en lloc de dir 'John is sad', es podria escriure una acotació com '(John stares at the photograph, then puts it face down on the table)' i un diàleg breu i entretallat, que suggereixen tristesa sense anomenar-la directament.
Exercici 13
Exercici 15
Llegeix aquest resum: «A boy breaks a window and lies about it. His best friend takes the blame and is punished. Unable to bear the guilt, the boy finally confesses.»
Exercici 16
Reescriu en tercera persona aquest fragment narrat en primera: «I opened the door and felt my heart pounding. I was sure someone was waiting for me.»
«She opened the door and felt her heart pounding. She was sure someone was waiting for her.»
Really.»
Mostra la solució
Exemple: JOAN: (twisting his hands, avoiding her eyes) I'm fine. Really.
Exercici 19
Exercici 20
Classifica aquests exemples d'ironia (verbal, situational, dramatic):
Exercici 25
Escriu un comentari breu (70-90 paraules) d'aquestes quatre línies: «The city sleeps in silver rain, / its windows blinking, tired eyes; / and I, a stranger on the train, / carry a home that never dies.» Esmenta tema, recursos i to.
Mostra la solució
Model: «The poem explores homesickness and identity from the point of view of a migrant. The city is personified (it sleeps, its windows are tired eyes), which creates a calm but lonely atmosphere. The speaker, a stranger on a train, contrasts with the city; and the metaphor of carrying a home shows that belonging does not depend on place. The ABAB rhyme gives the poem a soft, song-like rhythm. The tone is nostalgic but hopeful.»
Exercici 27
Defineix «unreliable narrator» i analitza aquest fragment: «“I am perfectly calm,” I said, wiping my sweaty hands on my trousers for the fifth time. “Nothing is wrong. I have never been calmer.”» Quin efecte crea?
Exercici 28
Llegeix aquest fragment teatral: MARTA: (not looking up) Dinner's in the oven. JOAN: (standing at the door, coat still on) Thanks. MARTA: There's no hurry. JOAN: (checking his watch) I know.
Revela distància i tensió entre ells.
Subtext: allò que no es diu. Marta no el mira i diu «There's no hurry», però el to suggereix reproche; Joan continua amb l'abric posat i mira el rellotge: vol marxar o es sent incòmode.
Model (54 paraules):
«The old house sighed (personificació) as the wind pushed against its windows. Inside, Anna sat as still as a statue (símil), listening to the storm. She had promised herself that she would not cry again, but the rain on the glass sounded like footsteps coming closer. Somewhere in the dark, a clock was counting her fears.»

The Last Tram
At midnight the tram sighs into the depot,
a tired animal shaking rain from its back.
The streets it carried all day lie empty now,
folded like letters nobody will answer.
I used to ride it home from school,
my forehead pressed against the cold glass,
counting lamps as if each one were a promise
the city made to those who stayed awake.
Now new lines run beneath the ground,
silent, fast, indifferent as time.
Still, some nights I hear that old bell ringing
somewhere between a memory and a dream.
a) Identify one personification, one metaphor and two similes. Explain the effect of each.
b) What is the theme of the poem?
c) Describe the tone and say how it changes between the stanzas.
d) What do the 'new lines beneath the ground' symbolise?
e) Explain the last line: 'somewhere between a memory and a dream'.
Pista 1
Per a (a), busca expressions que atribueixin qualitats humanes o animals al tramvia, i comparacions amb like, as o as if.
Pista 2
a) Personification: 'the tram sighs' gives the vehicle a human voice and a sense of tiredness. Metaphor: 'a tired animal shaking rain from its back' presents the tram as a living creature. Similes: 'folded like letters nobody will answer' (the empty streets seem like unanswered messages, which suggests loneliness); 'indifferent as time' (the new lines are cold and impersonal, like the passage of time); also 'as if each one were a promise' (lamps become promises, adding hope and security).
b) The passage of time and the loss of what is familiar: the speaker remembers an old tram and the sense of belonging that it gave.
c) Stanza 1: quiet and slightly sad, with a descriptive tone. Stanza 2: nostalgic and tender. Stanza 3: melancholic and reflective, with a note of resignation (Now, indifferent) and a faint hope in the last two lines.
d) The underground lines symbolise modern life: efficient and fast, but invisible, impersonal and detached from human experience.
e) The memory of the tram is so vivid and so distant that it is no longer clear whether it belongs to real life or to imagination; the bell links the speaker to a past that cannot be recovered.
Conceptes treballats: anàlisi poètica, personificació, metàfora, símil, to, tema, simbolisme.
Exercici 32
Prose: narrator and characterisation. Llegeix el fragment original i respon en anglès.
I want to be clear from the start that I have never been a jealous man. When my neighbour, Alderman Pryce, bought a bigger car than mine, I congratulated him warmly, and if I happened to scratch it with my key while parking, it was an accident, the sort of thing anyone could do. I only mention it because people in this street have started to talk. They say that I watch his house through the curtains. I do not watch; I observe, which is quite different, and I have excellent reasons. Last Tuesday, for instance, I saw him carrying a suitcase to the car at six in the morning. A man with a clear conscience does not leave at six in the morning. I have written down the number plate, naturally, in case it is ever needed. Not that I am the sort of person who keeps records.
a) What kind of narrator is this and why can he be called unreliable? Give three pieces of evidence.
b) What literary effect is created by the contradiction between what the narrator says and what the reader understands?
c) What does 'I do not watch; I observe' reveal about him?
d) How does the author show character indirectly, instead of describing it? Give one example.
e) Rewrite the first two sentences in the third person and explain what is lost.
Pista 1
a) A first-person narrator who is trying to present himself as reasonable and innocent. Evidence: he says he has never been jealous but scratched the car while parking (an 'accident'); he denies spying but watches through the curtains; he claims he does not keep records but has written down the number plate.
b) Irony (and dark humour): the reader understands more than the narrator, who exposes himself by trying to justify his behaviour.
c) That he uses language to disguise his behaviour: observe sounds neutral and scientific, while watch sounds intrusive. It reveals self-deception and a need to look respectable.
d) Through his own words and actions (show, don't tell): for example, the key scratch or the number plate show his jealousy and obsession without the narrator, or the author, naming it.
e) Mr Pryce's neighbour insisted that he had never been a jealous man. When Alderman Pryce bought a bigger car, he congratulated him warmly... The humour and irony are lost because the reader no longer hears the narrator justify himself; we gain a more objective perspective but lose intimacy and the comic self-exposure.
Conceptes treballats: narrador no fiable, ironia, caracterització indirecta, punt de vista, show, don't tell.
Exercici 33
Theme versus plot.
Tomás, a fisherman in a small coastal village, finds a bottle on the beach containing a message from a child in another country. He spends months searching for a way to reply, asking harbour workers, teachers and even a ship's captain. When he finally finds the child's address, he learns that the child, now an adult, has forgotten about the message. Tomás is disappointed, but he realises that his search has brought him closer to his neighbours, who have helped him all along.
1. A fisherman finds a bottle on the beach.
2. Friendship.
3. Sometimes what we gain from a search is more valuable than what we find.
4. The child who wrote the message has forgotten it.
Pista 2
Un tema no és una paraula sola (friendship): és un enunciat que afirma alguna cosa (Friendship can grow from ...).
Pista 3
b) The plot is the sequence of events (what happens); the theme is the underlying idea about life that the story suggests (what it means).
c) Friendship can grow in unexpected ways when people help each other with a shared goal.
d) Exemple: Cinderella. Theme: Kindness and patience can eventually be rewarded. Justification: Cinderella remains kind despite mistreatment and ends up recognised and happy.
Exercici 34
Drama: stage directions and subtext.
(A small kitchen. MIRA is wiping a table that is already clean. Her brother, DANI, stands at the door, suitcase in hand.)
DANI: I'll be back for Christmas.
MIRA: (not looking up) Of course.
DANI: Mira.
MIRA: The train's at six, isn't it? You should go. (She wipes harder.) There's rain coming.
DANI: (puts the suitcase down, then picks it up again) I could stay another week.
MIRA: (suddenly gentle) No. You couldn't. (A long silence. The clock ticks. She finally looks at him.) Take the blue scarf. It's on the hook.
(DANI takes the scarf. He pauses at the door as if about to speak, then leaves. MIRA stands still, then starts wiping the table again.)
a) What are stage directions? Give two examples from the text and explain their function.
b) What is the subtext of the dialogue?
c) How does the scene apply the principle of 'show, don't tell'?
d) What is the symbolic value of wiping the clean table?
e) Write one new stage direction that would give the ending a hopeful tone.
Pista 1
a) Stage directions are the instructions in a play script that describe setting, actions, movements, tone of voice and silence. Examples: (not looking up) shows that Mira avoids facing the situation; (A long silence. The clock ticks.) creates tension and shows that words are not enough.
b) Mira does not want her brother to leave and Dani is reluctant to go, but neither says so openly. Their talk about the train, the rain and the scarf hides feelings of sadness and love.
c) Emotions are not named: they are shown through actions (wiping, putting the suitcase down and picking it up, the pause at the door) and through practical lines (Take the blue scarf).
d) It suggests that Mira is trying to control her emotions and keep busy; the action replaces the words she cannot say.
e) (At the door, DANI turns, smiles and waves the scarf; MIRA allows herself a small smile.)

Symbolism in a short story. Llegeix el conte original i respon en anglès.
In the village of Aldermoor stood a clock tower whose hands had stopped at ten past four on the day the miller's daughter left. Nobody dared repair it. Year after year, travellers laughed at the broken clock, and the villagers explained that it was 'waiting'. One winter, a stranger arrived with tools and offered to fix it. The villagers argued for a week. Some feared that time would start again and bring back the sadness; others longed for it. Finally the oldest woman spoke: 'A clock that tells no time tells only one thing: that we are afraid.' The next morning, the stranger climbed the tower. When the hands began to move, the whole village heard the bells for the first time in thirty years, and, strangely, some of them were crying and some of them were laughing.
a) What does the stopped clock symbolise?
b) Why do the villagers argue?
c) Interpret the old woman's words.
d) What does the ending suggest?
e) Choose one more symbolic element (the stranger, the winter or the bells) and interpret it.
Pista 1
Pista 3
El final mescla plor i riure: quina emoció complexa suggereix?
Mostra la solució
a) The stopped clock symbolises grief that has not been overcome: the village refuses to accept the loss of the miller's daughter and lives frozen in the moment of her departure.
b) Because they have opposite feelings: some fear that moving on means feeling the pain again, while others want to move on and recover.
c) The woman says that the broken clock is a sign of the villagers' fear: they have chosen not to measure time because they are afraid to face the change that the passage of time brings.
d) That accepting change is both painful and liberating: the mix of tears and laughter shows that the villagers feel sadness and relief at the same time.
e) The stranger symbolises an outsider who offers a new perspective and the courage to take action; the bells symbolise the return of life and community; the winter reflects the emotional coldness of the village.
Conceptes treballats: simbolisme, interpretació literària, personatges col·lectius, final ambigu, to.

Writing: literary commentary (140–170 paraules). Escriu un comentari d'aquest poema original. Segueix aquests passos: tema, estructura, recursos literaris (almenys dos), to i valoració personal.
Inheritance
My grandmother left me no money,
only a cracked blue teacup
and the habit of warming my hands
on things that are almost broken.
I drink my coffee from it every morning.
The crack runs like a river on a map
and, somewhere along its line,
I find the way back to her kitchen.
Pista 1

This short poem explores how ordinary objects preserve memory and love. The speaker explains that, instead of money, the grandmother left a cracked teacup, which turns out to be a richer inheritance because it connects the speaker with her. The poem is divided into two stanzas: the first presents the legacy, and the second shows how the speaker uses it every day. A simile, 'the crack runs like a river on a map', transforms the damage into a path, suggesting that imperfection leads back to the past. The title is ironic, since 'inheritance' usually implies wealth, and here it means emotional value. The tone is tender and quiet, and the simple vocabulary reflects the modesty of the grandmother. Personally, I find the poem moving because it shows that the most valuable things are not always the most expensive. It also suggests that grief and gratitude can coexist.
Vocabulary: lèxic literari (legacy, simile, stanza, tender). Cohesion: seqüència tema-estructura-recursos-to-valoració. Adequacy and coherence: cobreix els passos demanats amb citacions i interpretació.
Errors típics
- Parafrasejar el poema en lloc d'analitzar-lo.
- Enumerar recursos sense explicar-ne l'efecte.
- No citar el text.
- Escriure una valoració personal sense raons.
Conceptes treballats: comentari literari, tema, estructura, símil, ironia del títol, to, valoració personal.

Point of view. Llegeix aquest fragment en tercera persona.
Clara stood at the edge of the platform, holding her ticket so tightly that the paper had begun to soften. The train was late. She watched the faces of the people around her and wondered whether any of them was also running away from something. When the headlights finally appeared in the tunnel, she took a deep breath and told herself that nobody would ever find her there.
Pista 1
Canvia els pronoms i els temps verbals i ajusta els possessius (her → my).
Pista 2
a) Model (68 paraules): I stand at the edge of the platform, holding my ticket so tightly that the paper is beginning to soften. The train is late. I watch the faces of the people around me and wonder whether any of them is also running away from something. When the headlights finally appear in the tunnel, I take a deep breath and tell myself that nobody will ever find me there.
b) The first person and the present tense create immediacy and intimacy: we share Clara's thoughts as she has them, and the tension seems greater because the outcome is uncertain. In the third person, the narrator keeps a certain distance and could tell us more about what she does not know. The first-person narrator may also be unreliable, since we see only her interpretation.
c) The driver saw a young woman at the very end of the platform, gripping a ticket as if it might escape. She did not look at the train, but at the faces around her. This narrator knows only what he sees: her posture and her gaze; he cannot know that she is running away or what she is thinking.
Conceptes treballats: punt de vista narratiu, primera i tercera persona, narrador limitat, canvis de temps i pronoms, efecte narratiu.

Interculturality in literature. Llegeix el fragment original i respon en anglès.
My mother still speaks to me in Wolof when she is angry and in French when she is being polite, but in the kitchen, among the pots, she invents a third language that only the two of us understand. 'Come, come, mange, taste this,' she says, mixing English, French and Wolof in a single breath. At school, I speak English with the careful accent I practise in the mirror. Nobody here knows that at home I am another person. Sometimes I feel I am carrying two suitcases, one in each hand, and that if I put one down, I will lose it. My grandfather says that a person with two languages has two souls. I am not sure about the souls, but I am sure about the tiredness.
a) Which languages does the narrator's mother use and when? What does each choice show?
b) Explain the metaphor of the two suitcases.
c) What is the effect of the mixed sentence 'Come, come, mange, taste this'?
d) What is the attitude of the narrator towards her double life? Quote the text.
e) Compare this experience briefly (3–4 sentences) with that of a bilingual speaker in Catalonia.
Pista 1
a) She speaks Wolof when angry, French when polite, and a mixed language in the kitchen. Each language is linked to a different emotional or social role: anger, formality, intimacy.
b) The two suitcases represent the two identities or cultures (home and school) that the narrator carries; if she puts one down, she fears losing it. The metaphor suggests effort and a burden.
c) The mixture of languages creates a sense of warmth, creativity and belonging; it shows a family identity that does not fit into a single language.
d) The attitude is ambivalent: she accepts her grandfather's idea of 'two souls' with scepticism, but openly admits the 'tiredness' of living between two worlds.
e) Model. In Catalonia, many people also move between languages depending on the context, for example Catalan with family and Spanish or English in other situations. As in the text, each language may carry a different emotional value. However, the Catalan experience is usually less marked by migration or by hiding part of one's identity at school.
Conceptes treballats: interculturalitat, identitat i llengua, metàfora, to ambivalent, comparació amb l'experiència pròpia.

Figurative language. Identifica el recurs literari de cada frase (llista: personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, oxymoron, alliteration, irony, metonymy) i explica'n l'efecte.
1. The wind whispered secrets to the sleeping town.
2. Her smile was a lighthouse in the storm of the meeting.
3. The room fell as silent as a library after closing.
4. I've told you a million times.
5. The silence was deafening.
6. Slowly, softly, the snow settled on the silent street.
7. Oh, great, another test on Monday morning.
8. The pen is mightier than the sword.
Reescriu la frase 2 sense llenguatge figurat i explica què es perd.
Pista 1
Una metàfora diu que una cosa és una altra; un símil compara amb like o as. Una personificació dona qualitats humanes a una cosa.
Pista 2
1 Personification (the wind and the town act like people: creates a calm and mysterious atmosphere). 2 Metaphor (the smile guides and comforts, like a lighthouse). 3 Simile (silence compared to a library: total, respectful). 4 Hyperbole (exaggeration to express annoyance). 5 Oxymoron (silence cannot be loud: it expresses a heavy, uncomfortable silence). 6 Alliteration (repetition of s imitates the soft sound of snow). 7 Irony (the speaker says 'great' but means the opposite). 8 Metonymy (pen stands for writing and ideas; sword for military force).
Reescriptura. Her smile calmed me during a tense meeting.

Writing: opinion essay (125–150 paraules). Reading fiction from other cultures makes us more tolerant. Do you agree? Write an opinion essay.
Pista 1

Pista 3
Fes servir connectors per estructurar: Firstly, Secondly, Admittedly, In conclusion.

Model de resposta (139 paraules):
Reading fiction from other cultures can, in my view, make us more tolerant, although it does not guarantee it.
Firstly, novels allow us to see the world through the eyes of someone very different from us. When we follow a refugee, a teenager in another country or an elderly woman in a distant village, we understand their fears and hopes from the inside, which is something that news reports rarely achieve.
Secondly, literature challenges stereotypes. A character who does not fit our expectations reminds us that people cannot be reduced to their nationality or religion.
Admittedly, a person can read widely and remain prejudiced if they read only to confirm what they already think. Tolerance also depends on our willingness to listen.
In conclusion, fiction is a powerful tool for empathy, provided that we read with an open mind.
Criteris (quatre criteris oficials de la PAU, 1 punt cadascun): Grammar: condicionals, relatives, subordinades de concessió i condició (provided that). Vocabulary: stereotypes, empathy, prejudiced, willingness. Cohesion: Firstly, Secondly, Admittedly, In conclusion. Adequacy and coherence: tesi matisada, dos arguments, contraargument i conclusió coherent.
Conceptes treballats: opinion essay, literatura i empatia, estereotips, estructura argumentativa, matisos.

El símil compara de manera explícita amb like o as («brave as a lion»). La metàfora identifica directament una cosa amb l'altra («he is a lion»).
