Exercicis de vocabulari B2 i word formation — Anglès 2n Batxillerat
El vocabulari és clau a les tres parts de la PAU d'anglès, i aquests exercicis el treballen des de diversos angles. Formes paraules de la categoria correcta, com impossible a partir de possible, corregeixes col·locacions incorrectes en un fragment i busques sinònims en un text de reading, com un de crucial. També treballes vocabulari de temes d'actualitat i passes frases informals al registre formal, com una petició d'informació que comença amb «Hi! I wanna know». Les solucions expliquen per què cada paraula és l'adequada. Errors típics: triar una categoria gramatical equivocada en el word formation i repetir sempre paraules comodí com good, bad o important.

Exercici 31
Word formation. Forma una paraula a partir de la que hi ha entre parèntesis per completar cada buit. Cal canviar la categoria gramatical i, de vegades, afegir-hi un prefix, un sufix o un plural.
Working from home has become an (1) ___ (INCREASE) common feature of many careers. Employers who once feared a loss of (2) ___ (PRODUCTIVE) now admit that staff are often more (3) ___ (CREATE) and (4) ___ (RELY) than in the office. Nevertheless, the (5) ___ (ABSENT) of face-to-face contact can lead to (6) ___ (UNDERSTAND) between colleagues, and some employees complain of feeling (7) ___ (ISOLATE) from the company culture. The (8) ___ (EMPLOY) who hope to keep their best workers must therefore offer greater (9) ___ (FLEXIBLE) and genuine (10) ___ (RECOGNISE) of their efforts.
Pista 1
1. increasingly (adverbi que modifica l'adjectiu common; an increasingly common feature).
2. productivity (nom després de loss of).
3. creative (adjectiu després de more).
4. reliable (adjectiu coordinat amb creative; rely → reliable canvia la y per i).
5. absence (nom després de the; absent → absence).
- Errors d'ortografia: reliabel, flexibilty, recognision.
Conceptes treballats: formació de paraules (sufixos de nom, adjectiu, adverbi), prefixos negatius, plurals, canvis ortogràfics, categoria gramatical segons el context.
Exercici 32
Vocabulary in context. Llegeix el text i respon a les preguntes en anglès.
Urban community gardens are no longer a niche hobby. In neighbourhoods where green space is scarce, residents have turned empty plots into vegetable patches, sharing tools, seeds and knowledge. Sceptics once dismissed the projects as an ephemeral fashion, yet many gardens have thrived for more than a decade. Their survival is often hampered, however, by uncertain land contracts: a plot can be sold at short notice, and months of work can vanish overnight. Local councils, now under growing scrutiny, are being urged to protect these spaces. The gardeners themselves are remarkably resilient: when one site closes, they simply move on and start again.
a) Explain the meaning of the six words in bold, using a synonym or a short definition, and name the clue in the text that helped you.
b) What does the writer imply about the gardeners with move on and start again?
c) What can you infer about the writer's opinion of the local councils? Justify your answer.
Pista 1
Per deduir el significat d'una paraula, busca contrasts (yet, however), exemples i la lògica de la frase. Per exemple, què ha de passar amb un projecte perquè els escèptics s'equivoquin?
Pista 2
A (b), pensa què demostra aquesta conducta sobre la seva actitud davant els problemes.
Pista 3
A (c), fixa't en els verbs i adjectius: being urged, growing scrutiny.
Mostra la solució
a) scarce: in short supply; clue: residents turned empty plots into vegetable patches, so there is little green space. ephemeral: short-lived; clue: the contrast with yet many gardens have thrived for more than a decade. thrived: grew successfully, flourished; clue: it contrasts with ephemeral and the period of time. hampered: hindered, made more difficult; clue: it is followed by the problem of uncertain land contracts and however introduces a difficulty. scrutiny: close examination or attention, often critical; clue: councils are being urged to protect the gardens. resilient: able to recover quickly after difficulties; clue: when one site closes, they simply move on and start again.
b) That they do not give up: they accept setbacks as part of the process and keep their enthusiasm and energy, which is the idea contained in resilient.
c) The writer seems critical, though not openly hostile. The councils are under growing scrutiny and need to be urged to protect the gardens, which implies that they have not done enough so far. The writer does not accuse them directly; the criticism is implicit.
a) Scientists did an important discovery last year.
b) We had heavy rain all weekend.
c) Please make an effort to arrive on time.
d) He has big chances of winning the election.
e) The company did huge losses last year.
f) The film received very good critics.
g) The country is going through a deep economic crisis.
h) He said a lie to his boss.
Part 2. Completa amb la forma correcta de make, do, take o have: ___ a mistake, ___ the washing-up, ___ a break, ___ a party, ___ a favour, ___ a phone call, ___ a photo, ___ research.
Pista 1
Una col·locació és una combinació que els parlants nadius trien de manera natural; no es pot deduir d'una traducció literal.
Pista 2
Pensa en la col·locació amb discovery, losses i lie: quin verb tria l'anglès per al «fer» d'un resultat i quin per a «dir» una mentida?
Pista 3
A (f), critics són persones. Quina paraula designa les opinions escrites sobre una pel·lícula?
Mostra la solució
Correctes: b), c) i g). Errors: a) made an important discovery; d) has a good chance of winning (o every chance); e) made huge losses; f) received very good reviews (critics són els crítics, no les crítiques); h) told a lie (el verb que acompanya lie és tell).
Part 2. make a mistake, do the washing-up, take/have a break, have/throw a party, do a favour, make a phone call, take a photo, do research. (throw a party també és correcte, però throw queda fora dels quatre verbs de l'enunciat.) En aquestes col·locacions el verb no es tradueix literalment: l'ús ve fixat per la tradició lingüística.
Errors típics
- Traduir «fer un descobriment» com do a discovery i «fer pèrdues» com do losses.
- Confondre critic («crític», persona) amb criticism o review («crítica»).
- Utilitzar say a lie per analogia amb «dir una mentida».
- Traduir «tenir moltes possibilitats» amb big chances.
Conceptes treballats: col·locacions verb + nom (make, do, take, have, tell), adjectiu + nom, falsos amics, calcs del català.
Exercici 34
Register: from informal to formal. Reescriu aquest paràgraf en un registre formal (60–80 paraules), apropiat per a un email a una botiga. Després enumera sis canvis que has fet i justifica'ls.
Hi! I'm writing 'cause I wanna tell you that your shop is rubbish. I bought a phone last week and it broke straight away. I rang you loads of times, but nobody picked up. So, I want my money back, OK? Get it sorted ASAP!
Pista 1
Els canvis de registre afecten el vocabulari (verbs i expressions), la gramàtica (contraccions, to de la petició) i l'estructura de la frase.
Pista 2
Substitueix els phrasal verbs i els adjectius vagues per verbs formals i expressions de cortesia (I would be grateful if you could...).
Pista 3
Evita les exclamacions, les abreviatures i les formes de parla (wanna, 'cause).
Mostra la solució
Model de resposta (69 paraules):
I am writing to complain about a mobile phone that I purchased from your shop last week and which stopped working almost immediately. I have telephoned your customer service department on several occasions, but nobody has answered my calls. I would therefore be grateful if you could refund the full amount at your earliest convenience. I enclose a copy of the receipt and look forward to your prompt reply.
Canvis possibles: 1. Hi! → salutació formal a l'encapçalament (no forma part d'aquest paràgraf). 2. I'm writing 'cause I wanna tell you → I am writing to complain about. 3. your shop is rubbish → eliminat: una queixa formal descriu el fet, no insulta. 4. bought → purchased; broke straight away → stopped working almost immediately. 5. rang... loads of times → telephoned... on several occasions; picked up → answered. 6. I want my money back → I would therefore be grateful if you could refund the full amount; ASAP → at your earliest convenience.
Errors típics
- Només canviar paraules soltes, deixant contraccions i estructures col·loquials.
- Fer el text artificial amb mots molt rars en lloc de formes habituals de la correspondència formal.
- Ometre el connector lògic que enllaça les parts (therefore).
- Mantenir el to agressiu (your shop is rubbish) amb vocabulari formal.
Conceptes treballats: registre formal i informal, vocabulari formal, phrasal verbs vs verbs formals, cortesia, estructura de l'email de queixa.
Exercici 35
Synonyms and connotation. Per a cada grup de paraules, tria la més adequada a cada frase. Després explica en català la connotació de cada paraula (positiva, neutra o negativa).
Grup 1 (skinny, slender): 1) She has a ___, elegant figure. 2) He looks far too ___; he should eat more.
Grup 2 (thrifty, stingy, economical): 3) My grandfather is so ___ that he never leaves a tip. 4) Being ___, she managed to save enough for a deposit on a flat. 5) A heat pump is a more ___ way of warming the house.
Grup 3 (childlike, childish): 6) His ___ behaviour at the meeting embarrassed everyone. 7) She looked at the sea with ___ wonder.
Grup 4 (assertive, aggressive): 8) A good manager is ___ without being ___.
Pista 1
1) slender (positiu, elegant). 2) skinny (negatiu o poc afalagador: massa prim).
3) stingy (negatiu: roí, no vol gastar). 4) thrifty (positiu: estalvia amb seny). 5) economical (neutre-positiu: eficient en cost; s'aplica a coses i mètodes).
6) childish (negatiu: immadur). 7) childlike (positiu: innocent, espontani).
8) assertive ... aggressive (assertive: segur i directe, positiu; aggressive: hostil, negatiu).
Exercici 36

9. Patients must ___ several tests before surgery.
10. Before you accept the offer, I would urge you to ___ your decision.
Després, explica el valor de cada prefix: over-, under-, out-, mis-, re-.
Pista 1
Conceptes treballats: verbs amb prefix (over-, under-, out-, mis-, re-), precisió lèxica, formes verbals, vocabulari acadèmic.
Exercici 37
Open cloze: prepositions and fixed expressions. Completa cada buit amb UNA sola paraula.

(9) ___ spite of these criticisms, thousands of young people take (10) ___ the challenge every year.
Pista 1
Els buits (1), (2), (3), (5), (7) i (8) són preposicions que depenen de l'adjectiu, el nom o el verb que els precedeix.
Pista 2
Els buits (4), (6) i (10) formen part d'expressions fixes: It goes... saying, live... to expectations, take... the challenge.
Pista 3
El buit (9) forma una preposició composta amb spite.
Mostra la solució
1. of (capable of + -ing). 2. of (evidence of). 3. on (keen on). 4. without (It goes without saying). 5. for (responsible for). 6. up (live up to expectations). 7. to (object to + nom o -ing). 8. on (spent on). 9. In (In spite of). 10. up (també on: take up the challenge o take on the challenge).
Errors típics
- Escriure capable to o keen in per influència del català.
- Confondre object to amb object against.
- Escriure despite of (la forma correcta és despite o in spite of).
- Oblidar la partícula en els verbs preposicionals (live to expectations).
Conceptes treballats: preposicions dependents d'adjectius, noms i verbs, expressions fixes, verbs preposicionals, vocabulari de la PAU.
Exercici 38
Writing: magazine article (125–150 paraules, sense comptar el títol). Escriu un article per a la revista del teu institut amb el títol Is It Time to Switch Off? sobre l'ús excessiu dels dispositius digitals. Dirigeix-te directament al lector, dona la teva opinió i acaba amb una crida a l'acció. Fes servir almenys sis d'aquests elements lèxics: constant, distraction, well-being, resist, cut down on, mindfully, unplug, compulsively.
Pista 1
Un article és menys formal que un essay: pots apel·lar el lector amb preguntes i amb you, però manté la correcció.
Pista 2
Estructura: ganxo inicial, desenvolupament amb dos o tres arguments, matís (reconeix els avantatges de la tecnologia) i final amb una proposta.
Pista 3
Integra el lèxic en frases amb sentit; no n'hi ha prou amb ficar-lo en una llista.
Mostra la solució
Model de resposta (135 paraules, sense comptar el títol):
Is It Time to Switch Off?
How many times have you checked your phone today? If you are anything like me, the answer is embarrassing. Our devices have become a constant distraction, interrupting lessons, meals and even conversations.
Experts warn that spending too many hours online can damage our well-being, leading to anxiety and poor sleep. Yet it is hard to resist the temptation of one more notification. That is why some of my classmates have decided to cut down on screen time by leaving their phones in a drawer after nine o'clock.
Admittedly, technology is not the enemy: we need it to study, to communicate and to relax. The real challenge is to use it mindfully rather than compulsively.
So this weekend, why not unplug for a few hours? You might be surprised by how much you enjoy the silence.
Lèxic requerit: constant, distraction, well-being, resist, cut down on, mindfully, unplug, compulsively (els vuit elements). Registre semiformal, un ganxo inicial amb pregunta, un matís (Admittedly...) i una crida final.
Criteris: Grammar (present perfect, estructura causal, comparatius), Vocabulary (lèxic requerit integrat amb naturalitat), Cohesion (Yet, That is why, Admittedly, So), Adequacy and coherence (títol, to adequat, opinió i crida).
Errors típics
- Escriure com un essay formal sense apel·lar el lector, o massa col·loquial amb abreviatures.
- Utilitzar el lèxic proposat de manera forçada o incorrecta (unplug per «desendollar» un aparell sense sentit figurat).
- Oblidar la crida a l'acció o el matís.
- Superar el límit de paraules amb una introducció llarga.
Conceptes treballats: article de revista, to semiformal, apel·lació al lector, vocabulari temàtic (tecnologia i benestar), connectors.
Exercici 39
Idioms in context. Fes les tres parts.
1. Losing that job was a blessing in disguise: it pushed me to start my own business.
2. The 200 complaints we have received are only the tip of the iceberg.
3. I hate going to the dentist, but I'll just have to bite the bullet.
4. On the immigration debate, many voters are still on the fence.
5. A quick joke helped to break the ice at the start of the meeting.
6. One small donation is a drop in the ocean compared with what is needed, but it's a start.
7. You've hit the nail on the head: the problem isn't money, it's trust.
8. I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so I'll stay in today.
a) 1. Something that seems bad but turns out to be good. 2. A small visible part of a much bigger problem. 3. To accept something unpleasant and face it bravely. 4. Undecided; not yet choosing a side. 5. To make people feel more relaxed at the start of a social situation. 6. A very small amount compared with what is needed. 7. To describe exactly the cause or the truth. 8. Slightly ill.
b) Under the weather i bite the bullet són les més col·loquials. Per a un registre formal: slightly unwell i accept the unpleasant situation (o face the difficulty). També serien bones hit the nail on the head i drop in the ocean per a l'ús oral.
c) Un iceberg té la major part sota l'aigua: la imatge indica que les 200 queixes són només la fracció visible d'un problema més ampli i que n'hi ha més que encara no han sortit a la llum. No té res a veure amb gel real.
Errors típics
- Traduir paraula per paraula (una gota a l'oceà funciona, però bite the bullet no té traducció literal útil).
- Fer servir expressions col·loquials en un text formal.
- Confondre on the fence («no decidit») amb «estar al límit».
- Mesclar dues expressions (the tip of the ocean).
Conceptes treballats: expressions idiomàtiques, significat figurat, registre, equivalents formals, comprensió per context.
Exercici 40
Current-affairs vocabulary. Completa el text amb les paraules de la llista (cada una només es pot usar una vegada). Hi ha quatre paraules de més. Totes les paraules s'usen tal com apareixen a la llista.
cooperation, decline, drastically, gap, hostile, inflate, outweigh, renewable, rise, scarce, scrutinise, sustainable, tackle, threatened
Governments around the world are under pressure to (1) ___ climate change, but experts warn that targets will remain unrealistic unless carbon emissions are cut (2) ___. Some countries have invested heavily in (3) ___ energy, such as wind and solar power, while others still depend on fossil fuels. Critics argue that (4) ___ development should never come at the expense of local communities, whose livelihoods are often (5) ___ by large projects. Only through international (10) ___ can these challenges be met.
Explica per què cada una de les quatre paraules que sobren no encaixa.
Pista 1
Decideix la categoria gramatical de cada buit (verb en infinitiu, adverbi, adjectiu, nom, participi) i descarta les paraules de la llista que no la tinguin.
Pista 2
Entre els noms, rise i decline són oposats; l'argument del text indica quin dels dos és coherent amb les preocupacions que s'exposen.
Pista 3
Pensa quin adverbi pot modificar el verb cut i quin adjectiu pot descriure l'energia solar i eòlica.
Mostra la solució
1. tackle. 2. drastically. 3. renewable. 4. sustainable. 5. threatened. 6. rise. 7. gap. 8. outweigh. 9. scrutinise (o scrutinize). 10. cooperation.
Conceptes treballats: vocabulari d'actualitat (clima, tecnologia, societat), col·locacions (tackle climate change), categoria gramatical, precisió lèxica.

Preguntes freqüents
Com es prepara el word formation?
Mirant primer quina categoria demana el buit (nom, adjectiu, verb o adverbi) i si cal un sentit negatiu o plural. Després tries el sufix o el prefix adequat.
Per què s'han d'evitar paraules com good o important al writing?
Perquè són massa generals i repetitives. Paraules més precises, com beneficial, essential o significant, mostren un nivell de vocabulari més alt.
