Exercici 2
Defineix 'skimming' i 'scanning' i explica en què es diferencien.
Exercici 4
Classifica com a simile o metaphor: (a) «She is as brave as a lion.» (b) «Time is a thief.»
Mostra la solució
(a) simile (símil): compara dues coses amb as ... as o like.
I opened the door and felt my heart race.» (b) «She opened the door and felt her heart race.»
Exercici 6
Ordre: exposition → rising action → climax → falling action → resolution.
Exercici 8
Quin estat d'ànim (mood) crea aquesta frase? «The wind howled through the empty corridors.» Justifica-ho.
Mostra la solució
Crea un mood inquietant o misteriós (eerie).
Les paraules howled i empty suggereixen soledat i por, i el soroll del vent reforça la tensió.
Exercici 9
Identifica la personificació (personification) i explica-la: «The sun smiled down on the village.»
Exercici 10
Classifica com a caracterització directa o indirecta: (a) «Tom was a generous man.» (b) «Tom gave his last sandwich to the stranger.»
Nivell intermedi
Exercici 11
Llegeix: 'Tom checked his watch again. The train was already ten minutes late, and his interview started in twenty.'
Exercici 12
Llegeix: 'The old house at the end of the street had been empty for years. Every night, Anna watched a light move behind its broken windows.'
Resposta oberta amb estructura correcta; exemple vàlid: abstracte: 'She was very sad.' Amb imagery: 'Her eyes filled with tears and her shoulders sank.'
Exercici 15
Llegeix: «When Amara stepped off the bus in Manchester, the rain was falling sideways. She clutched her suitcase and checked the address again. Everyone around her spoke too fast.»
Estat d'ànim: de tensió i desorientació.
Detalls: clutched her suitcase, checked the address again (nerviosisme), spoke too fast (no entén bé l'idioma). La pluja forta reforça la sensació d'hostilitat.
Exercici 16
Quins sentits desperta aquest fragment i quin efecte crea? «The kitchen smelled of cinnamon and warm bread; the radio hummed an old song.»
Mostra la solució
Olfacte (cinnamon, warm bread) i oïda (radio hummed an old song), amb un toc de tacte (warm).
Exercici 17
Dedueix pel context el significat de ravenous i digues quines pistes t'ajuden: «The villagers were ravenous after the long march; they devoured the bread in minutes.»
Mostra la solució
Ravenous = famolenc, amb moltíssima gana.
Pistes: after the long march (esforç llarg), devoured the bread in minutes (mengen molt ràpid).
Another Monday, and the bus is late again.» (b) «The old man sat alone; the chair beside him had been empty for years.»
Mostra la solució
(a) To irònic i humorístic: brilliant no és sincer, sinó sarcàstic.
Exercici 19
Llegeix: «In Kavita's house, Diwali meant lamps on every window. In her school in Leeds, the first of November was just another day.» Quin contrast cultural hi ha i quin tema suggereix?
Exercici 20
Llegeix: «Every morning, Lena watched the swallows from her window; the glass was thick, and the window never opened.»
Model: «A fisherman finds a gold ring inside a fish. Although he could sell it, he returns it to the widow who lost it. She thanks him with bread, and they become friends.»
Exercici 25
Reescriu en primera persona aquest fragment i explica com canvia l'efecte sobre el lector: «Sara walked into the dark room. She was sure someone was watching her.»
Mostra la solució
«I walked into the dark room. I was sure someone was watching me.»
Exercici 26
Analitza aquest poema: «The river keeps the city's secrets / and carries them away to sea; / I whisper mine into the water, / hoping it won't tell on me.»
Exercici 27
Compara aquests dos fragments: A (visitant): «At six, Ben was hungry. At eight, the family was still talking. Dinner finally appeared at half past nine.» B (amfitrions): «Our guest kept checking his watch. We thought he was bored. Dinner at nine is perfectly normal.»
Hi has d'usar imatges sensorials (imagery).
Mostra la solució
Model: «The old bookshop smelled of dust and rain. Maya ran her fingers along the cracked spines, listening to the clock tick above the door. Suddenly, between two dictionaries, she saw a small silver key. It was cold in her hand, and on its handle someone had scratched her name.»
Exercici 30
Llegeix: «Joel never spoke in class. On the day of the school play, the lead actor fell ill. Joel stood up and said, "I know the lines." When the curtain fell, the whole hall applauded. The next day, he raised his hand for the first time.»
Exposició: Joel mai no parla a classe.
Clímax: s'ofereix a substituir l'actor malalt.
Tema: superar la timidesa i guanyar confiança.
Canvi del personatge: de callat i reservat a confiat i participatiu.
Exercici 31
Llegeix el poema:
The lantern fades above the quay,
The boats lie black as stone;
A gull cries out across the sea,
And I stand here alone.
a) Quin és l'esquema de rima?
b) Identifica un símil i explica'n l'efecte.
c) Quin to i quin tema transmet el poema?
Mostra la solució
a) ABAB (quay / sea; stone / alone).
b) Símil: 'black as stone' (marcat amb 'as').
Exercici 32
Llegeix el fragment:
I was perfectly calm, I told myself. My hands, which had been shaking for an hour, gripped the wheel so tightly that the knuckles went white. It was only the cold, of course.
b) 'Hands shaking for an hour', 'knuckles went white' i l'excusa 'only the cold' mostren que té por o està nerviós.
Exercici 33
Llegeix el fragment:
Mr Hale never threw anything away. His cupboards overflowed with string, jars and old letters, and when his neighbour's boy broke the window, Mr Hale sighed, swept up the glass and offered the boy a biscuit.
b) Estalviador o acumulador ('never threw anything away', 'cupboards overflowed'); pacient i amable ('sighed, swept up the glass and offered the boy a biscuit': no s'enfada i el tracta amb afecte).
Exercici 34
Llegeix la frase: 'On the day her grandmother's house was sold, Aina took a single seed from the dying orange tree and put it in her pocket.'
a) Què pot simbolitzar la llavor?
b) Quin tema suggereix el fragment?
c) Quin altre símbol hi trobes i què significa?
Exercici 35
Llegeix el fragment:
At home, Samira was Samira; at school, she was 'Sam'. She switched names the way she switched languages, without noticing, until the day her mother called her 'Sam' by mistake and both fell silent.
Exercici 36
Compara aquestes dues versions:
A. Lena hid the letter; she did not know that her brother, upstairs, had already read it.
B. Lena hid the letter, wondering if anybody had noticed.
A. The city sprawled under a grey haze, its streets choked with noise.
B. The city glittered at dusk, its streets humming with promise.
b) Quines paraules ho mostren?
Mostra la solució
a) A: actitud negativa, d'opressió i malestar. B: actitud positiva, d'il·lusió i fascinació.
b) A: 'sprawled' (s'escampa sense ordre), 'grey haze', 'choked' (ofegats), 'noise'. B: 'glittered', 'humming', 'promise'.
The corridor was long and white, and her footsteps were the only sound in it.'
Mostra la solució
Model de resposta (uns 65 mots):
The writer creates a strong sense of isolation through setting and sound. The corridor is described as 'long and white', which suggests emptiness and coldness. Moreover, the fact that 'her footsteps were the only sound' emphasises the silence around her and shows that she is completely alone. Together, these details make the reader feel the character's vulnerability and anticipate that something unsettling may happen.
Claus: afirmació, cita literal breu, explicació de l'efecte.

Exercici 39
Llegeix el text i respon en anglès.
The first week in Bristol, Leila learned that rain could have a hundred names. There was the thin, polite rain that hung in the air like a rumour, and the heavy rain that drummed on bus shelters as if demanding entry. Back home, the first rain after the dry season was celebrated; here, it was simply endured, and people spoke about it the way others speak about distant relatives, with a mixture of complaint and affection. She began to collect their phrases (not too bad, could be worse, mustn't grumble) and noticed that nobody ever said exactly what they meant. 'Not too bad' meant 'good'. 'Could be worse' meant 'terrible'. It was, she decided, a language of its own, and she had a great deal still to learn.
a) What is the narrative point of view?
b) Identify one simile and one personification and explain their effect.
c) What is the tone of the passage?
d) What does the text suggest about indirect communication?
e) What theme is developed?
Mostra la solució
a) Third person limited, focused on Leila's thoughts and discoveries.
b) Simile: 'hung in the air like a rumour' (the rain is thin, light and almost unnoticeable). Personification: rain 'drummed ... as if demanding entry' (the rain behaves like an insistent person).
c) Gently humorous and observational, with a touch of affection.
d) That some cultures say less than they mean: phrases like 'not too bad' hide positive or negative feelings, so a newcomer must learn to read between the lines.
e) Cultural adaptation: understanding a place means learning its unwritten codes, not only its words.
Exercici 40
A. I carry my mother's kitchen in my suitcase: cardamom, a chipped cup, her recipe for patience.
B. He had lived on Elm Street for fifty years and had never once wondered where home was.
Mostra la solució
Model:
My grandmother's words are stones in my mouth,
smooth from years of being carried;
the new words flutter, quick birds
that never quite land.
Mostra la solució
Model de resposta (uns 160 mots):
This free-verse poem explores the tension between a heritage language and a newly acquired one. The speaker describes the grandmother's words as 'stones', a metaphor that suggests weight, solidity and age. They are 'smooth from years of being carried', which implies that they have been handed down through generations and have been softened by use, like objects treasured over time. By contrast, the 'new words' are compared to 'quick birds that never quite land'. This second metaphor conveys movement, lightness and insecurity: the speaker cannot fix these words in memory or feel at ease with them.
The absence of rhyme and the short lines give the poem a quiet, reflective tone. Moreover, the contrast between heavy and light imagery reflects the speaker's divided identity. In conclusion, the poem suggests that inherited languages carry emotional depth, while acquired ones, however useful, take time to become home. It is a delicate image of what migrants gain and lose when they change language.
Claus de correcció: identificar tema, dues metàfores, contrast i to; citar breument.

Exercici 45
Continua aquest relat amb 120–150 paraules. Inclou escenari, imatges sensorials, un breu diàleg i un detall cultural.
The letter arrived in two languages, and the second was the one she had been avoiding.
Mostra la solució
Model de resposta (uns 140 mots):
Nora put it on the kitchen table and stared at it while the kettle whistled. The first language was the one she used every day, crisp and efficient. The second, her grandmother's, curled across the page in looping letters that smelled, in her imagination, of cinnamon and old wool.
'Aren't you going to read it?' her brother asked from the doorway.
'I know what it says,' she replied, though she did not.
She remembered Sunday lunches, the whole family shouting over each other in that language, and how she had slowly stopped joining in, ashamed of her accent. Now the words on the page seemed to be waiting for her, patient as an old friend.
Finally she sat down, took a deep breath, and began to read aloud, stumbling over the first line but not stopping.

Escriu un essay de 180–220 paraules sobre aquesta afirmació: 'Reading literature from other cultures is the best way to develop empathy.'

Many educators argue that stories can make us more empathetic, and I largely agree that reading literature from other cultures is one of the most effective ways of developing this quality.
First of all, fiction places readers inside another person's mind. Through first-person narration or free indirect style, we experience unfamiliar feelings and customs as if they were our own, which is something a news report rarely achieves. Furthermore, literature written by authors from different traditions challenges our assumptions: images, proverbs and symbols that seem strange at first gradually reveal different ways of understanding the world.
Some critics, however, claim that reading about other cultures is no substitute for real contact with people. This is a fair objection; nevertheless, books can prepare us for that contact by providing vocabulary, context and curiosity. Moreover, they allow us to approach experiences, such as exile or war, that we could hardly encounter directly.
In conclusion, although literature alone cannot guarantee empathy, it is a powerful and accessible starting point. For this reason, schools should include works from many cultures in their reading lists and encourage pupils to discuss them openly.

Relaciona cada recurs literari amb l'exemple adequat: foreshadowing, flashback, verbal irony, motif, hyperbole, oxymoron.
1. 'Little did she know that the key would soon open more than a door.'
2. She closed her eyes and was nine again, standing in her grandfather's garden.
3. 'What lovely weather!' said Tom, as the rain soaked him.
4. Doors recur throughout the story: locked, half-open, slammed.
5. 'I've told you a million times!'
6. A deafening silence filled the room.

a) «Qui no s'arrisca no pisca» → (i) Who doesn't risk doesn't fish. (ii) Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
b) «Fer-se el sord» → (i) To make oneself the deaf. (ii) To turn a deaf ear.
c) «Mirar-se el melic» → (i) To look at one's navel. (ii) To be navel-gazing.

Nuria served the tourists with a polite smile, though she had heard the same questions a hundred times: Is it always this hot? Do you speak English? Where can we find paella? She answered patiently, then turned back to the kitchen, where her father was waiting.

Model de resposta (uns 105 mots):
We had barely sat down when the waitress arrived, smiling warmly. I asked her whether it was always so hot, and she answered with kindness, as if it were the first time anyone had asked. I felt glad that she spoke English, because my Spanish is limited, and I wanted to try the local paella. She told us where to find the best one, then disappeared into the kitchen. I thought how lucky she was to work in such a beautiful place, never imagining that she might be tired of our questions. Perhaps, I reflected later, politeness can hide fatigue as well as kindness.

Achebe meant that writers from former colonies should not simply copy the English of Britain but, while keeping its connection with the original language, adapt it to express their own reality. A 'new English' would include local rhythms, proverbs and vocabulary, so that the language reflects the world of the characters instead of a foreign one.
I find this idea convincing. English is no longer the property of its native speakers; it is used by millions of people with different cultural backgrounds, and each community shapes it. Literature in these varieties gives readers access to perspectives that would otherwise stay hidden. Admittedly, some argue that using the colonisers' language limits authenticity. However, adapting it to local voices is a way of taking control of it.
In short, Achebe's view shows that a global language can be both a shared tool and a vehicle for diversity.
