1

Exercici 1

Give the noun form of the verb 'succeed', from the same word family.

Mostra la solució

success (verb: succeed → noun: success → adjective: successful → adverb: successfully).

2

Exercici 2

Is 'career', in 'She has a successful career as a lawyer', translated as 'carrera universitària' or 'trajectòria professional'?

Mostra la solució

Trajectòria professional: 'career' is a false friend. 'Carrera universitària' in English is 'degree' or 'course', not 'career'.

3

Exercici 3

Què vol dir 'actually'? És un false friend?

Mostra la solució

Vol dir 'de fet, en realitat'. Sí que és un false friend: no vol dir 'actualment', que és 'currently' o 'nowadays'.

4

Exercici 4

Forma el nom abstracte afegint el sufix -ness als adjectius happy, kind i dark.

Mostra la solució

El sufix -ness converteix un adjectiu en un nom que expressa una qualitat o un estat.
happy → happiness (la y final passa a i), kind → kindness, dark → darkness.
Error típic: oblidar el canvi y → i en happiness.

5

Exercici 5

Escriu el contrari de cada paraula afegint el prefix adequat (un-, in-, im-, il-, dis-): legal, polite, agree, visible.

Mostra la solució

legal → illegal (il- davant de l);
polite → impolite (im- davant de p);
agree → disagree (dis- amb molts verbs);
visible → invisible (in- davant de v).
No hi ha una regla única: cal aprendre quin prefix porta cada paraula.

6

Exercici 6

Completa amb la paraula de la família de employ: (a) The company has fifty ___ (persona que treballa per a l'empresa). (b) She is looking for ___ (feina).

Mostra la solució

(a) employees: employ + -ee designa la persona que rep l'acció (qui és contractat).
(b) employment: employ + -ment forma el nom abstracte (feina, ocupació).
Nota: employer seria qui contracta, el cap o l'empresa.

7

Exercici 7

Tradueix al català la paraula destacada i digues si és un fals amic: «My sister works in a library, so she reads a lot.»

Mostra la solució

Library vol dir «biblioteca», no «llibreria».
Sí que és un fals amic: «llibreria» (on es venen llibres) en anglès és bookshop o bookstore.
Frase: «La meva germana treballa en una biblioteca, així que llegeix molt.»

8

Exercici 8

Tria make o do per a cada col·locació: (a) ___ a mistake; (b) ___ homework; (c) ___ a decision; (d) ___ the shopping.

Mostra la solució

(a) make a mistake; (b) do homework; (c) make a decision; (d) do the shopping.
Les col·locacions s'aprenen com a blocs: make sol anar amb coses que es creen o es produeixen (mistake, decision) i do amb tasques i activitats (homework, shopping).

9

Exercici 9

Què vol dir el phrasal verb give up a la frase «He gave up smoking last year»? Escriu-ne una altra frase pròpia.

Mostra la solució

Give up vol dir «deixar de fer alguna cosa» (un hàbit) o «rendir-se».
A la frase: «Va deixar de fumar l'any passat.»
Frase pròpia, per exemple: «I never give up when a problem is difficult.»
Després de give up el verb va en gerundi (-ing).

10

Exercici 10

Forma dos adjectius a partir del nom care: un amb el sufix -ful i un amb -less. Explica'n la diferència de significat.

Mostra la solució

careful («amb cura, prudent») i careless («descuidat, sense cura»).
El sufix -ful vol dir «ple de» i -less vol dir «sense».
Exemple: «Be careful with the glasses» / «It was a careless mistake».

12

Exercici 12

Mostra la solució

'Swimming here is very dangerous.' L'adjectiu es forma amb -ous (danger → dangerous).

14

Exercici 14

Choose the correct word: 'The lecture was so ___ (bore) that half the students fell asleep.'

Mostra la solució

boring: the adjective describes the thing that causes the feeling (the lecture), not the person who feels it, so it takes the -ing form, not -ed.

15

Exercici 15

(a) She gave a very ___ (impress) performance.
(b) The ___ (decide) was not easy.

Estratègia: mira primer quina categoria gramatical demana el buit.

16

Exercici 16

Tria la forma correcta: «I was completely (exhausted / exhausting) after the journey, because it was an (exhausted / exhausting) trip.»

Mostra la solució

17

Exercici 17

Corregeix l'error de formació de paraules en cada frase: (a) «He is a very responsable person.» (b) «The system is unefficient.»

Mostra la solució

(a) responsible: l'adjectiu acaba en -ible, no en -able (ni a la catalana).
(b) inefficient: el prefix negatiu de efficient és in-, no un-.
Cal memoritzar el prefix de cada paraula: no es pot deduir sempre per analogia amb el català.

Mostra la solució

(a) good at; (b) afraid of; (c) responsible for.
Aquestes preposicions depenen de l'adjectiu i no coincideixen sempre amb les del català (per exemple, «bo en matemàtiques» és good at).

20

Exercici 20

Combina cada paraula de la llista A amb una de la llista B per formar quatre noms compostos: A = sun, book, rain, foot; B = glasses, shop, coat, ball.

Mostra la solució

sunglasses, bookshop, raincoat, football.
Els noms compostos s'escriuen de vegades junts (raincoat), de vegades separats (book shop també es troba) o amb guionet; el segon element indica què és la cosa i el primer, de quin tipus.

21

Exercici 21

24

Exercici 24

Model de resposta (uns 175 mots):
It is often claimed that a wide vocabulary is more valuable than perfect grammar, and I largely agree, although not without reservations.
To begin with, communication rarely breaks down because of a missing article or a wrong tense. Listeners can usually reconstruct the meaning of an ungrammatical sentence, whereas an unknown word leaves them with nothing to work with. Anyone who has travelled abroad knows that a handful of well-chosen nouns will take you further than flawless but empty sentences. Moreover, vocabulary grows naturally through reading and listening, and it enables learners to express increasingly sophisticated ideas.
Nevertheless, accuracy cannot be dismissed. In academic or professional contexts, persistent mistakes may create an impression of carelessness and undermine the writer's credibility. Likewise, understanding how prefixes and suffixes work allows learners to guess unfamiliar words, so both skills are interdependent. Classroom time should therefore be shared between them, with a clear emphasis on words.
In conclusion, vocabulary should come first, since it is the foundation of understanding, but learners who neglect grammar will find their progress unsatisfactory in the long run.
Claus de correcció: (1) tesi clara i matisada; (2) estructura en introducció, dos arguments, contraargument i conclusió; (3) almenys sis derivats ben formats i connectors variats.
